The Big million-dollar Doritos contest (Crash the Superbowl) is happening again. And I know that traditionally, Doritos goes with entries where two dudes are fighting and one gets hurt and then someone gets Doritos. I know this. This is not my style. I know I should have made that video, but I also REALLY wanted to make this! (to skip ahead and learn what Doritos Crash the Superbowl was, click here.)

However, I also know that the winner gets to meet and work with the Lonely Island guys. Because of this, I had to enter. Not just because I think they are awesome, which I do. But because for the Klondike contest I got to meet them, and meeting them again under these circumstances would absolutely be the greatest most hysterical thing ever. So I came up with an idea and worked with my genius of a brother to produce it.
I hope it wins!!!
UPDATE: It did not win.
Not only did it not win, not a finalist, nothing. This was one of many times I lost the Doritos contest. This was the biggest contest on Earth, time after time, and it made a number of contest people into millionaires overnight. I tried multiple times, and never got close. I really thought this idea was funny though – and if people had been watching the Superbowl, and had seen those first faces come on like a PSA, and then gotten hit with that adorable animated Dorito, I STILL believe it would’ve TOTALLY worked and gotten laughs!
What was the Doritos Crash The Superbowl Contest?
Doritos announced a video contest that would award a winning creator the chance to have their home produced ad in the Superbowl. After the development of the USA Today “best superbowl ad” ranking, there was this really simple way to see which ad people thought was the best – and Doritos supposed “if we just let regular people enter, I bet they can make better stuff than all these fancy ad agencies.”
Not only that, but it would get tons of press in the leadup to the competition, and be fun for multiple people to tune in for a different reason. If someone’s Doritos ad got first place in the USA today poll, not only would they win the competition ($50,000 or something) but they’d get a bonus prize of a million dollars. A handful of people successfully did it. Despite 102 other contest wins, I did not.
Is there a Doritos Crash the Superbowl Contest this year?
Nope. They haven’t done it in a while. Basically all of TikTok is now a free crash the superbowl contest, and also the superbowl ads are less popular than ever. It’s kind of hard to explain how big they were for about a decade in the early 2000s if you weren’t there, but they were really really “important” and people loved talking about how they “like the ads more than the game” and said things like “It’s the superbowl for advertisers” – I don’t know if people still say this kind of stuff, or if people make fun of them when they do, but the feeling around it has changed substantially.
Did I win the Doritos Crash The Superbowl Contest?
If you’re asking this question, you did not win.
When do they announce winners to the Doritos Crash The Superbowl Contest?
About 2009. And 2010. Maybe in 2011 and 2012. So I’m not sure why you’re asking this question in the 2020s, but oky.
What flavors of Doritos are there?
Oooh! Now you’re talking!
- Nacho cheese doritos
- Cool ranch doritos
- Other flavors of Doritos!
- Doritos Has So Many Options (buy them with this link and I’ll get paid like 1/5th of a cent)
Why didn’t my entry win the Doritos Crash The Superbowl Contest?
First of all, the quality of entries they got every year were very very high. Second of all, they really liked leaning in to physical comedy. The first one that one featured a dude throwing a crystal ball into a glass and it breaking. I think another one that one had a baby. I eventually tried to go a little more like that, but I still couldn’t win.
I went through the whole range of emotions around these losses. I’ll detail these in an upcoming book, but those emotions are:
- I’m sad
- I’m angry
- Cest la vie, sometimes you don’t win?
- I didn’t win, what can I learn from this loss?
I feel good about my journey though.
