Henry Weinhard (owned by Miller) was hosting a video contest, looking for a way to tell people about the Man Henry Weinhard, behind the Henry Weinhard Soda and Henry Weinhard Beers. Apparently, the mellifluous steady lyrics and gentle piano backing I used underneath Henry saying “Hops, yes mother fucker” were apparently just want the Henry Weinhard folks were looking for! It won!!!
The winning Henry Weinhard contest entry
First, here’s the winning video:
Last I checked it was still on the Henry Weinhard youtube channel and had been seen approximately 150,000 times.
It was made using a pair of overalls which anyone who has been watching this blog has seen a LOT (most notably as part of the Delta contest).
The beard was new and cost 10 dollars. The chalk was my kids and cost probably 6 dollars. It was probably Crayola chalk because that dollar store chalk absolutely sucks and never could’ve done this quality of artwork. I am moderately proud of the quality of my chalk drawing.
Was Henry Weinhard a real person?
Yes! Henry Weinhard was a real person. He was a German-American brewer who founded the Henry Weinhard’s brand of beers and sodas1. He was born on February 18, 1830 in Lindenbronn, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 18522. He settled in Portland, Oregon where he established his brewery and became a prominent citizen2
Did Henry Weinhard have a beard?
It wasn’t some like flash of creative brilliance that convinced me to put a beard on for this contest entry. He TOTALLY had a beard! Though it doesn’t look like the beard pictured in the video, because I needed one that would go over my ears and stay in place.
What is Henry Weinhard known for?
No surprise here, Henry Weinhard the MAN is known because he was a successful brewer. During his life, he made beer and cream soda and a few others.
Henry Weinhard the COMPANY, currently brews a bunch of drinks – and despite winning this contest entry, I have literally never tried one of them.

Is Henry Weinhard Soda good?
I have never tasted it. But I asked a robot AI to answer that question for me in the style of a 19th century Oregonian hopmeister and here’s what it said.
Henry Weinhard soda is the finest refreshment in all of Oregon. It is made with pure cane sugar and natural flavors, unlike those cheap imitations that use corn syrup and artificial colors. It is a treat for the palate and a delight for the senses. Whether you prefer the smooth and creamy Vanilla Cream, the tangy and fruity Orange Cream, the rich and dark Root Beer, or the crisp and refreshing Black Cherry, you will find a soda that suits your taste. Henry Weinhard soda is good for any occasion, whether you are celebrating a successful harvest, enjoying a picnic with your family, or relaxing after a hard day’s work. Try it today and you will see why Henry Weinhard soda is the best in the West!
